No photos please...

Is it too dumb to go into mourning for one's hair??

It had to go. I *know* this. This doesn't make me like it. But when you have to ask your daughter to put your hair up in a ponytail in order to get some exercise, and you can only reach your head with one hand... it's time for a haircut. I got an appointment with a very good stylist and tipped her well, because I don't actually hate her for cutting my hair off. (2 feet of it!) I might even learn to like it. Later. Maybe after my cast is off and I can do stuff for myself again.

After growing my hair for nearly 4 years, last March I got it cut short. While I was GLAD because there was considerable common SENSE in doing that - in Houston, thick, long hair is NOT often a good thing - I was, at the same time, actually grieving for my hair. I can no longer ponytail, braid, French twist, bun, or just plain wad it up! I felt a piece of both my femininity AND 'Indian-ness' remained in that pile of hair on the hairdresser's floor. And I have no CHOICE about the style - CURLY - until it grows again. IF I allow it to grow again. You will have days when you love your new shorter 'do' - days when you ask yourself what you were THINKING. But one thing is absolute. It's gone until it grows again. So SMILE at your pretty self & know it's just hair. I'm guessing you look beautiful!

Kai has said it best ... you can grow it back if you want to .. but for now you can be carefree ... it's okay to mourn your hair! What does the family think of the new do?

Judi, I know just how you are feeling. It's an odd feeling to go from long hair to short. I look so different, I don't feel like me now. Myabe i will get used to and learn to like it, but I miss my hair and regret cutting it.

I mourned my hair, and I didn't cut off nearly as much as you did. After a while, I think hair becomes like history in our minds. Cutting it becomes like changing identity. But your new cut is really cute.
